What is this scan?
An abdomen ultrasound examines the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, urinary bladder and — in women — the uterus and ovaries.
When is it performed?
Advised for abdominal pain, dyspepsia, suspected gallstones, kidney stones, jaundice, urinary symptoms, fever evaluation or routine health checks.
Preparation
- Fast for at least 6 hours before the scan.
- Only sips of plain water allowed during fasting.
- Come with a comfortably full bladder for pelvic evaluation.
- Bring previous reports, prescriptions and blood test results.

Do I need fasting before an abdomen scan?
Yes. A minimum of 6 hours of fasting is required for an abdomen ultrasound. Only sips of plain water are allowed.
Can I take my regular medicines?
Yes, with a small sip of water — unless your doctor has advised otherwise.
How long does the scan take?
Usually 15–25 minutes.
Is an abdomen ultrasound painful?
No, it is painless. A water-based gel is applied and a probe is moved across the abdomen.
