What is this scan?
The NT scan is a first-trimester ultrasound that measures the nuchal translucency (fluid at the back of the baby's neck) to screen for chromosomal abnormalities.
When is it performed?
Performed between 11 weeks 0 days and 13 weeks 6 days of pregnancy.
Preparation
- Drink 2–3 glasses of water 1 hour before the scan.
- Do not empty your bladder until after the scan.
- Wear comfortable, two-piece clothing.
- Bring previous scan reports if any.

What is an NT scan?
The NT scan measures the fluid at the back of the baby's neck. Combined with maternal blood tests, it screens for chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome.
When should the NT scan be done?
Between 11 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days of pregnancy. Outside this window the measurement is not reliable.
Do I need a full bladder for an NT scan?
A moderately full bladder is helpful. We will guide you when you book.
Is the NT scan compulsory?
It is a screening test, not compulsory, but strongly recommended in the first trimester.
