What is this scan?
A pregnancy scan uses safe, sound-wave imaging to check your baby's growth, anatomy and well-being at different stages of pregnancy.
When is it performed?
Routine scans are recommended at 6–9 weeks (dating), 11–13+6 weeks (NT), 18–22 weeks (anomaly/TIFFA), and 28–36 weeks (growth). Additional scans may be advised.
Preparation
- Wear loose, two-piece clothing.
- For scans before 12 weeks, drink water and arrive with a comfortably full bladder.
- Bring any previous scan reports and prescriptions.
- After 12 weeks, no special preparation is needed.

How many pregnancy scans are usually needed?
Most pregnancies need a dating scan, an NT scan (11–13+6 weeks), an anomaly/TIFFA scan (18–22 weeks) and one or more growth scans. Additional scans may be advised based on your clinical condition.
Is ultrasound safe during pregnancy?
Yes. Diagnostic ultrasound has been used safely in pregnancy for decades. It does not use radiation.
Do I need a full bladder?
A full bladder is usually needed only for early pregnancy scans before 12 weeks. Our staff will guide you when booking.
How long does a pregnancy scan take?
Most pregnancy scans take 15–30 minutes. Anomaly scans may take longer depending on the baby's position.
